Obstetric emergencies during pregnancy

Obstetric emergencies that may arise during pregnancy include:

  • miscarriage – The loss of a baby before the 20th week of pregnancy. Once a miscarriage has begun, it is impossible to stop it. The mother may require antibiotics or DNC to remove any residual tissue.
  • Ectopic pregnancy – Instead of implanting in the uterus, the fertilized egg implants in one of the fallopian tubes or ovaries. If the tube splits as a result of the pregnancy, it can cause severe discomfort and bleeding. The pregnancy cannot be continued, and treatment usually results in the tube being removed.
  • Placental abruption – where the placenta separates from the uterus before birth, causing bleeding, pain, contractions, and even fetal death, if not managed properly.
  • Placenta previa – The placenta is in the lower section of the uterus, partially or fully covering the cervix. As a result, vaginal bleeding may occur during pregnancy or during labor.
  • Pre-eclampsia and eclampsia (Convulsions) – Water retention causes severe edema in pre-eclampsia (or pregnancy-induced high blood pressure). It has the potential to cause renal and liver failure. It can be fatal for the woman and the fetus.
  • Premature rupture of membranes (PROM) – Before contractions or labor begins, the bag of amniotic fluid ruptures. If the waters burst before 37 weeks of pregnancy, there is a serious risk of amniotic fluid leakage or infection of the amniotic sac.

Why things may go wrong during pregnancy

Unfortunately, sometimes pregnancy may not go in the right direction. Women may have a miscarriage, an ectopic pregnancy, loss of the baby, or congenital anomalies in the babies.

One of the common reasons for miscarriage during early pregnancy is that the developing fetus (fetus) does not get properly developed or attached to the uterus. Most abortions are seen in the first trimester however, a few are also seen in the second trimester for a variety of reasons. Other obstetric emergencies can be due to genetic factors also leading to congenital anomalies. Careful study of previous pregnancies of expecting mothers might sometimes aid gynecologists/Gynecologists in identifying and preparing for potential difficulties and planning future pregnancies.
